Una Langmead died in St Kilda after a fall whilst riding the Wall of Death. She fell into the pit where her husband was standing.

Australian rider Andy Caldecott died when he crashed his KTM halfway through the ninth stage of the Dakar Rally. Caldecott, born in Keith, South Australia, had four consecutive wins in the Australian Safari Rally (2000-2003) and had competed in the Dakar Rally in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
