Kork Ballington wins the 250cc and 350cc Class Spanish Grand Prix riding a works Kawasaki at the Circuito del Jarama in Madrid. He won the World Championship for both classes in 1978 and 1979.

Robbie Knievel, son of Evel, jumps the Grand Canyon. His jump was 233 feet. The Grand Canyon averages ¾ of a mile in width, and is 600ft at its narrowest point. It was not actually the Grand Canyon which Robbie jumped, but a much smaller canyon. Fox News, which televised the event, failed to mention this.
