The new Motodrom for the German Motorcycle Grand Prix in Hockenheim is opened. With a history dating back to 1930, Hockenheimring now accomodates up to 120,000 spectators.

Max Friedrich "Fritz" Scheidegger with Englishman John Robinson as passenger win the West German Sidecar GP riding their 500cc BMW RS54.

That year they won the West German GP at Hockenheimring, the French GP, the Dutch GP, Belgian GP and Isle of Man TT to take the World Championship.

Funeral of William H. Davidson in Wisconsin. Son of HD co-founder William A. Davidson, he was an avid motorcyclist who was an AMA National Enduro Champion and became president of Harley-Davidson in 1942. He resigned in 1973 after AMF took over the company.
