Skip Van Leeuwen wins his first AMA National in Gardena, California. Skip dominated AMA TT competition in the 1960's and was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 1999.

Doug Chandler wins the inaugural Camel Motorcycle Grand Prix of Miami. Before a crowd of some 20,000 at Bicentennial Park he led all 31 laps. Chandler later took the AMA Grand Slam, with wins at a mile, half-mile, short track, TT and road race, and was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2006.
