Norton-Villiers-Triumph (NVT) chairman Dennis Poore meets with Meriden's union stewards to inform them he intends to close the Triumph plant and move operations to Small Heath in Birmingham. An 18 month strike ensued.

Giulio Cesare Carcano died this day, aged 95.
Carcano produced many notable designs for Moto Guzzi including the magnificent V8 racer and the V-twin engine which became the mainstay of the fleet for over half a century.
