absolutely love Maicos, and am the proud owner of a 1983 490 spyder. Also, contrary to your web page, Maico, although suffering some setbacks, is in business and producing some very impressive motocross bikes.

The setbacks, along with Japanese competition have not done much for their popularity, though.

    Hi there from California,

Just dusting off my 83 Maico 490 Spyder and was just getting back into racing again since high-school where I raced Maico 400’s,450’s and the 490. Have all the original stuff, and used to race for them in the TransAm. I am looking for info on new Maicos too, cuz when I was racing, Euro was in, and Jap was out, although I went on to race for USSuzuki later…

Who started offset fork axles? Maico

    Cantilever? Maico

    Mono? Maico

    Aluminum Swingarms? Maico

Who stole it all, Yamaha at first, then everyone jumped in. I was there, even though I’m 39 I was there thru it all. I have original factory jerseys and leathers ( yes leathers, NOT racing pants). I met Adolph Weil, ( Looked like Paul Newman ), and raced against many of the euros, back in the days…anyone interested?

Back in 85 in high school I rode a 83 490 sand spider and it totally scared the daylights out me . it was the fastest bike I have ever rode . Just the other day I was helping a friend clean out his garage and low and behold there was a 83 490 sand spider minus motor and pipe I asked him what he planed on doing with it he replied if you can find the parts it’s yours . So here I am in need of some parts and info on this bike. Can anyone help me out..? — L.C. — lcopeland at olynet.com

I’m looking for parts for the transmission of a 83 sandspider (Maico) and if you know of a place in Washington that repairs Maico’s. I can repair myself but don’t really have the time. Any info would be appreciated.

    HI,

I have a 1981 Maico Alpha 1 490 that is restored to near perfect condition. engine is fresh, gold wheels. The only thing that it could use is new fork seals. I am the second owner, the bike has been kept in my garage for years. Very well taken care of. I am asking $1750.00

Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks, Doug Fergus — jdfergus at mind.net
