Pedal assisted - friction drive to rear tyre by chain drive, motor mounted above conventional pedals and chainwheel.
Motorette
Built by Sanciome, 1900, at Route des Salins, Clermont Ferrant
Motorized bicycle with roller transmission on the rear wheel.
Mr Sanciome has constructed a motor bicyclette, actuated by periphery motion, that is by direct chain series, by friction on the actual bandage of the motor hind wheel.
The friction is obtained by a roller with rubber and metallic band, capable of advancing or retreating from the motor hind wheel. A lever within reach of the hand and which is worked without getting down from the machine permits the advancement or retrograding of the roller, and gives sufficient grip, varying according to the desired result, as also to the disengaging gear, instantaneous and without shock.
...very simple and easily dismounted. The two photographic views which we reproduce give a sufficient explanation of the mechanism of the transmission which is the guarantee of its perfect action. Moreover the practical trials, which the inventor has given to the machine, enable special knowledge. The new motor has the immense advantage of being used by any amateur without...
