Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler dies aged 65.
In 1881 Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach began building four-stroke internal combustion engines based on the design of Nikolaus Otto. The result was patented in 1885, and soon afterwards they built a machine named Reitwagen, widely acknowledged as the world's first motorcycle.
