Ackland Motorcycles

A Brief History of the Marque

Ackland produced motorcycles from about 1919 to 1924.

The machine was built by William Ackland who was one of the many who went into motorcycle production after World War I. He used similar components to many other manufacturers of the era, but instead of the usual Villiers engines, he used JAP V-twins.

  • William Charles Ackland (1871-1942) founded the W.C. Ackland Motor and Cycle Company (1895-1936) and ran it with his son, William George Ackland (1903-1994).

An Ackland motorcycle resides in a Southampton Museum. It dates from 1922, has a 680cc V twin JAP engine and 3 speed Sturmey Archer box. It is believed to be the sole survivor.
