De Vecchi & Strada Motorcycles

A Brief History of the Italian Marque

Initially named De Vecchi Strada & C., later De Vecchi & C., the firm was active in Milan between 1904 and 1920.

In the workshop at via Bertani 16 in Milan, Giuseppe De Vecchi (who had trained with Prinetti e Stucchi) and Ettore Strada built motorcycles probably from 1904 to 1909, and during that period they also built automobiles. With the first effects of the international financial crisis of 1907 many Italian automotive firms collapsed, and by 1913 only four remained in Milan - De Vecchi among them.

Strada left the company in 1912 and the company was renamed to De Vecchi & C, continuing automobile component production throughout the duration of WWI and on until 1920. The firm also manufactured aircraft engines from 1917.

The story is elaborated in considerable detail here: In the Shadow of the Big Boys - De Vecchi and other pioneers of the automobile in Milan ~ AISA
