Ashburn motorcycles were produced from 1903 to 1905.
The Ashburn was built by Thomas Ashburn of Small Heath, Birmingham.
The 1905 model was fitted with a 2½ hp JAP engine.
No further mention of the machine appears in the press.
THE illustration herewith is that of a spring frame motor cycle which has been designed and made by Mr. Thomas Ashburn, 115, Somerville Road, Small Heath, Birmingham.
Last year we had occasion to refer to this machine, and we illustrated it. Since that date several modifications have been made, principally to the front fork. This is now straight, and efficient brakework has been added. The front brake is a lever brake applied by rods; these work right down the outside of the curved tubes which form the front mudguard and the attachment to the frame, and works on the tubular stays from the centre of the wheel, which in addition to being mudguard stays, also form a support for the curved tubes to hinge upon. The rear brake is applied by a Bowden wire, and consists of a pad acting on the inner periphery of the belt rim. We had a good long run on this machine a week or two ago, and were very pleased indeed with the way in which the rough town streets were negotiated as compared with a rigid frame.
Mr. Ashburn is desirous of licensing motor cycle manufacturers to make this frame, and those who think that a spring frame is an advantage should communicate with him at the address given. There is no doubt that many riders are prevented from motor cycling owing to the vibration, and we can confidently state that with the hard saddle illustrated the machine was delightfully easy and comfortable to ride. The engine tank and other motor parts are carried in a rigid diamond, and the road wheels rise and fall independently without throwing any strain on these vital portions. They should therefore last longer and carry out their functions better, being insulated from the road.
