A Brief History of the Marque

Manufactured 1931 to 1964

107 Chaussée de Hasselt, and later in Meerveldhoven.

The business was established in 1927 by Jean Hufkens who was joined by his four brothers selling Gillet motocycles. Two of the brothers raced on both Gillet and Sarolea machines - one finished second in the 1936 Bol d'Or.

The first Royal Nord motorcycles eventuated in 1931, 100cc and 125cc machines which were basically re-badged Gillets, joined in 1933 by a 175cc unit.

Production resumed after the war using 125, 150 and 175cc engines from JLO, Gillet and Maico. By the mid-50s they were selling Maico machines under their own label, the 400 Taifun as the Royal Nord 400 among them. The 400 did very poorly in the market as Belgian riders found it unattractive. Other more conventional Imperia-Maicos sold well.

In the 1950s and 60s they built a range of very attractive mopeds which included the Ambassadeur (1960), GT50, Polaris, and Super Vedette.

Hi Sheldon,
In the section of Belgian motorcycles there is one brand that is not mentioned and it's considered by the enthusiasts as the Belgian Number One :

Find enclosed 4 pictures from the 1966 factory brochure. All four are 50cc little beauties

Hope this is of any help. -- Best regards -- Ton van de Rijt -- Netherlands -- tonton at
