Betty and Nancy Debenham, with their dog, Poncho, were keen motorcyclists. Nancy won a Gold Medal at Brooklands in 1926.

Essor was firmly established as a cycle manufacturer at 68, rue de la République in Puteaux in the 1920s. The owner, Louis Ruffin, transferred the business to a Caen firm and became director of Austral, which used the original Essor premises.
