Arthur Allison Motorcycles, Adelaide

Allison, Lewis and The Rose, 1902

Arthur Allison with his Allison, Tom O'Grady with his Lewis and Wm Baulderstone with The Rose. All were built up by their owners and ridden in the 1902 competition at Adelaide Oval.

Arthur Allison of Allison's Motor Garage in Grenfell Street Adelaide built motorcycles from 1902 to 1906 using Minerva engines of up to 6 h.p., and also Sphinx engines (which were possibly rebranded Minervas). His address from 1907 is given as Twin Street.

Another cycle shop operator who developed a motorcyde was Arthur Allison. He was at the Exhibition Oval in 1902. His parents moved from UK in 1849, and had two children, Arthur, and his brother Charles who became a band leader. We know that from 1907 Arthur had a cycle works in Twin Street. He rode his Sphinx-powered motorcycle and supplied a number to others. Arthur drove a 10hp De Dion two cylinder car in a 1904 event and a 6hp Wolseley in 1905. By 1904 he was advertising cars for sale, so probably they were from stock.

In 1911 Arthur Allison was head of the Motor and Cycle Department at Eyes & Crowe, Pirie Street.
