J.N. Taylor Motorcycles & Components

J.N. Taylor of 121 Grenfell Street, Adelaide built frames and manufactured engine components including pistons. They also imported JAP and Dalm engines.

JAP distributor for South Australia

Prior to WWII motorcycle sales accounted for £25,000 of their turnover. In the early 1950s this had risen to £465,000. They acquired cycle manufacturer Osterstock Bros in Port Adelaide where they sold BSA, Norton, AJS, and Matchless. Osterstock closed in the early 1960s.

J.N.Taylor & Co manufactured these between 1919 and 1921
Motorcycles were built using JAP engines which the firm referred to as the JAP-Victor. A devastating factory fire in 1921 brought production to a halt.

Victor Blackburne

Leon Mitchel discovered such a machine, which he believes may be unique as there is no reference to it in the records. Powered by an 8hp Blackburne 60° V-twin, the fuel tank has green panels with "Victor Blackburne" in gold script. It has a Burman gearbox and an Excelsior frame from R. Walker & Sons.

Dave Basham was apprenticed to JN Taylor in 1956 at the age of 14. He went on to become an excellent competition rider in scrambles, observed trials and road racing.
