Alessandro Anzani nasce, da una famiglia modesta nel 1878 a Gorla, allora paesino alle porte di Milano.

Impara i primi rudimenti di meccanica nell'officina del padre che ripara macchine per cucire.

Giovanissimo emigra in Francia e si impiega come operaio alla nota fabbrica di motori Buchet.

Il lavoro gli permette anche di coltivare la sua passione per la velocita' e come molti piloti dell'epoca, Anzani lavora tutta la settimana per poter gareggiare la domenica in sella a motociclette Alcyon equipaggiate con motore Buchet, vincendo il campionato francese nel 1904 e nel 1905 il campionato mondiale.

Suo anche il record di velocità di 88 km/h sui 100 km.

Buon pilota ed ottimo tecnico Alessandro Anzani lascia la Buchet nel 1906 e inizia la costruzione in proprio di motori a tre cilindri disposti a ventaglio per uso aeronautico.

Con un aereo Voisin dotato del propulsore tricilindrico Anzani, il pilota Louise Bleriot attraversa per primo nel 1909 la Manica.

Con la celebrità Anzani raggiunge anche un invidiabile successo economico che gli consente di aprire stabilimenti per la produzione di motori in Gran Bretagna e in Italia.

La costruzione si articola su diversi tipi di propulsori, a uno e due cilindri, a V e contrapposti con cilindrate che vanno da 75 a 1.000 cc.

Nel 1921 vengono realizzati, nella fabbrica di Milano, due prototipi di motocicletta con propulsore di 750 cc a cilindri contrapposti che però non vengono prodotti in serie mentre continua la fornitura di motori sciolti ai piccoli costruttori di motociclette.



Made in Italy from 1922 to 1925

Italian pioneer Alessandro Anzani constructed engines for aircraft and motorcycles from 1907 in France. Later he founded a company in Milan and in 1922 constructed a V Twin 500 cc ohv and some sidevalve versions of 750 and 1000 cc.

Born in the village of Gorla on the outskirts of Milan in 1878, Anzani learned basic mechanical skills from his father before moving to France where he gained employment with the Buchet factory. He quickly developed a love of motorcycles and, riding an Alcyon-engined Buchet [1], won the French Championship in 1904 and the World Championship in 1905. He also took the speed record of 88 kph over 100km, a very respectable speed indeed for the day.

In 1906 he left Buchet to build his own machines, and in 1909 his three-cylinder Anzani engine powered Louise Bleriot's flight across the English Channel.

His early designs included a three-cylinder 25 horsepower engine which in 1910 powered Sikorsky's first aircraft, the S1 and the S2. His V3 engines also powered a triplane built by Caproni, another name well known in the world of motorcycling. In 1913 Anzani had seven different aircraft engines available, one of which was a two-row 10 cylinder radial.

Perhaps his strangest motorcycle was built in 1906. It had a tractor mounted propellor. Another oddity was the Anzani Stayer of 1929 which had a thick belt driving a huge disc attached to the rear wheel...

Bismarck and Universal were among the users of Anzani engines. There was also a firm named British Anzani, a subsidiary. Cotton and Greeves motorcycles used British Anzani engines.
