Motocicli Bianchi c.1927 by Fortunato Depero

Known as "Motociclista - Solido in Velocita", the original painting showed the words "MOTOCICLI BIANCHI". Depero painted them out when Bianchi refused the Futurist oil on canvas. This is one of the paintings he took to New York in 1928 so certainly the artist regarded it as a major piece. Bianchi's reason for rejection was that they were not interested in the US market. A letter from Pirelli around the same date (mid 1928) gave the same reason for rejecting one he created for them, also for a proposed advertising campaign in the US.

Hard to estimate what it may be worth now, but period books on his work sell for 6 to 13,000 euros.

The painting was on display in Madrid in the winter of 2014.

NB. Sources give dates of 1923 and 1944, both of which are improbable. Futurism, which began prior to WWI and continued through the nineteen-twenties, is the only twentieth century avant-garde art movement to have embraced far right politics. It's sad remants were seen in Nazi Germany.
