A Brief History of the Marque
83 rue Carnot à Suresnes.
The firm was founded by Anatole Lardy in 1926 and Ydral is an anagram of his name. It was very much a family business, involving sons, daughters and in-laws.
They began manufacturing front brake hubs in 1928. After the Second World War they began manufacturing motorcycle engines, and were soon supplying numerous assemblers who created a significant number of brands by purchasing their fuel tanks from one supplier (generally Mottaz, which explains why many brands have similar models), wheels, forks, shock absorbers, and brakes from another, and finally, engines from AMC, Villiers, or Ydral. These firms manufactured their own frames.
Specializing in the production of 125 and 175 cc two-stroke engines, Ydral were very much involved in competition, supplying AGF, Mochet and especially Libéria thanks to the engineer Georges Agache, who at times piloted his own machines.
In addition to the brands mentioned above, Ydral also supplied equipment to firms such as Bernardet, Follis, GIMA, Gitane, Guiller, Onoto, and Talbot (the latter being the "cycle" division of the famous car manufacturer, controlled by Perfer-Lecomte and distributed by Ets Gentil) in the tourisme and utility sales sectors.
To give an idea of Ydral's importance, in 1956, in the "moped" (125cc) category, it produced 23,000 Motobécane mopeds, 21,000 Peugeot mopeds, 12,000 Terrot mopeds, 9,000 Monet-Goyon mopeds, and 8,600 motorcycles of various brands equipped with Ydral engines, placing it 5th among national manufacturers, far ahead of Alcyon, Automoto, and Gnome-Rhône.
Ydral's activities declined from 1960 onwards, as did many other manufacturers. But the brand did not officially disappear until 1980 - long after it had ceased manufacturing engines.
