BENELLI (175)

Amilcare Rossetti - Raffaele Alberti

Benelli made a victorious debut at the 1927 Lario Circuit, taking the top three places in the 175cc category and setting new class records with its star rider, Tonino Benelli. The following year, Tonino Benelli won the race again, easily beating his own previous records, while the Pesaro-based marque also secured third place. In 1929, luck was not on the side of the Pesaro manufacturer; while leading the race, Tonino Benelli suffered a puncture and retired, though not before setting the lap record. He redeemed himself in 1930, finishing first in the category, with another Benelli machine taking third place. In 1931, the Benelli bikes were forced to retire due to accidents, crashes, and punctures, yet "Tonino" once again demonstrated the high quality of his machine by setting the lap record.

This year, Benelli enters the race with two machines entrusted to Italian champion Amilcare Rossetti and Raffaele Alberti–winner of the 1931 Lario race in the same category–fresh from a series of victories on both the national and international stages.

BIANCHI (500)

Fumagalli Carlo - Colombo Mario - Susini Federico

Bianchi is the brand that made Nuvolari's sporting glory right on the streets of the Lario Circuit, where he collected six consecutive victories. In fact, right from its debut on the Lario Circuit, the Bianchi 350 established itself as the best machine in its category, propelling Nuvolari to first place and taking four other motorcycles to the top; it shattered course and lap records. In the following years, 1926, 1927, and 1928, the success of the famous "Freccia Celeste" was even more resounding, as Bianchi machines occupied the top three places in their category, securing the lead sometimes with Nuvolari, sometimes with Varzi. Again in 1929 and 1930, Nuvolari won by a landslide with the Bianchi, finishing first overall as well as in the 350cc class, despite the caliber of his rivals competing in the higher category.

The Bianchi 350cc still holds the absolute course and lap records, which remained unbeaten in the 1931 edition.

After a brief respite, Bianchi returned to racing with its new 500cc model ...incorporating the classic design features of the famous and unbeaten 350cc model. It features a vertical single-cylinder engine with overhead valves actuated by camshafts driven by a vertical shaft and spur gears. Having won the Milan-Naples race last year with Pigorini and undergone a process of refinement, the Bianchi 500cc arrives at the Lario Circuit fresh from a brilliant victory in the Coppa del Mare at the Livorno Circuit–a course that shares many similarities with the Lario track.

CALTHORPE (500)

Giuseppe Garettoni

The Calthorpe is new to the Circuito del Lario, where it will participate with a single 350cc model, entrusted to the expertise of the well-known Roman racer Giuseppe Garettoni.

This brand enjoys a wide international reputation, due to the frequency with which it participates in endurance and regularity races; in the sprint field, it has not made frequent appearances, at least in Italian trials.

However, it is a motorcycle with purely sporting construction characteristics, thanks to its beautiful overhead valve engine, which is capable of holding its own against the racing machines in the category.

GALBUSERA (250 Class)

Enrico Manetti

The young Milanese constructor has specialized in sports machines, preferentially fitting them with the Python engine. The machine set to tackle the Lake Como race makes a fine impression and boasts noteworthy features, especially regarding the chassis, which has been designed with expert intelligence. It would come as no surprise to see this machine put in a strong performance in this demanding race.

C. F. (250)

Celeste Cavacciuti

C.F. (250 Class)

Celeste Cavacciuti

The Piacenza-based marque C.F. has already competed twice in the Lario Circuit–specifically in the last two editions–finishing fifth and seventh in 1930 and third in 1931, always racing in the 175cc class. Having moved away from that displacement to focus on the 250cc class, C.F. has remained true to its original, highly interesting design–particularly its overhead valve actuation system. In the new category, the bike immediately distinguished itself through speed and road-holding, posing a serious threat to its more famous direct rivals in the Milan-Naples race. That early promise was soon fulfilled; today, C.F. boasts brilliant victories at the Pesaro and Livorno Circuits, achieved with the outstanding Cavacciuti, who will once again defend the marque's colours at the Lario Circuit.

GILERA (500 Class)

Mario Ghersi

GILERA (500 Class)

Mario Ghersi

Italy's oldest motorcycle brand also holds the record for the number of appearances in the Lario Circuit within the same category, having missed only the 1931 edition. Gilera never actively sought victory in this race; it participated solely to demonstrate the durability, liveliness, stability, and reliability of its machines–vehicles whose design characteristics were those of touring bikes rather than pure racing machines. This did not prevent Gilera from coming close to victory in the 1928 edition, where it finished second in the 500cc class. In other editions, it consistently achieved highly respectable results that exceeded even the technical team's expectations.

For some time now, Gilera has been equipping a range of models with overhead-valve engines; while these lack extreme, high-performance specifications, they are capable of satisfying any sporting requirement.

However, at the Lario Circuit, Gilera will debut its new 500cc racing machine–a bike that has just been completed and is already highly acclaimed. It is a machine with distinctly sporty characteristics, featuring an overhead-camshaft engine and a unit-construction gearbox, and is notable for being very lightweight, stable, and safe.

GUZZI (250, 500)

Bandini Terzo - Brusi Riccardo Moretti Amilcare - Tenni Omobono Ugo Prini - Mangione Michele.

GUZZI (250, 500)

Bandini Terzo - Brusi Riccardo - Moretti Amilcare - Tenni Omobono Ugo Prini - Mangione Michele.

Guzzi is the marque that holds the record for victories at the Lario Circuit, boasting precisely four wins in the 500cc class and five in the 250cc class. It is the marque that, through its presence and the memorable battles fought against the British industry, elevated the status of the Lario Circuit and Italian motorcycling as a whole. The Lario Circuit's roll of honor is graced by the Guzzi name. Its first participation dates back to 1922, the second year of the Lario Circuit: a highly promising debut, as the–at the time–"green" machines from Mandello, to everyone's surprise, took second place overall, as well as fifth, eleventh, and fourteenth. The following year, amidst public enthusiasm, Guzzi secured the first overall victory for the Italian industry at the Lario Circuit. In 1924, Guzzi's success was even more resounding, foreshadowing its unforgettable victory in the inaugural European Championship. Guzzi's overwhelming success was repeated in 1925, taking first, third, fourth, and fifth place in the 500cc class, naturally setting new absolute records across the board. In 1926, the triumphant 500cc machines–the famous four-valve, overhead-valve single-cylinder bikes–were joined by their smaller 250cc siblings, marking the start of a winning streak at the Lario Circuit. It was a double victory for Guzzi that year: first and sixth place in the 500cc class, and first and second in the 250cc class.

In 1927, only the worst kind of bad luck prevented Guzzi from repeating its 500cc success, as the team managed only second and third place; however, Guzzi's dominance was reaffirmed in the 250cc class, where its riders took first and second place.

From that year on, Guzzi's official factory participation ceased.

In the following years, Guzzi was officially represented only in the 250cc class, returning to regular victories with the fiery Prini, while its other machines consistently took the top spots right behind the leader. Having returned to racing last year with its new twin-cylinder 500cc model–a rare example of bold engineering backed by solid technical substance–Guzzi successfully navigated its initial racing trials and has now achieved resounding success everywhere this year.

Guzzi could not miss the 12th Lario Circuit; indeed, the team arrived with a squad of ace riders and six machines, split between the two engine classes. While Guzzi is the favorite to win in both categories, it will face fierce opposition from a formidable rival coalition.

MILLER (250 Class)

Pagani Nello

MILLER (250 Class)

Nello Pagani

The Miller is a classic example of a sports motorcycle, built by the Balsamo Brothers of Milan–true specialists and pioneers of this type of machine. The Balsamo Brothers marque is no stranger to the Lario Circuit, having competed in the 1925, 1926, and 1927 editions in the 175cc category, achieving impressive results.

In 1931, Miller was represented at the Lario Circuit in the 175cc, 350cc, and 500cc categories –again through the initiative of private owners–securing excellent placements, such as a notable second place in the 175cc class, a fourth place in the 350cc, and a fifth in the 500cc.

This year, a single Miller will appear at the Lario Circuit in the 250cc category, brought there by the enthusiasm of the young Nello Pagani. The Miller-Pagani pairing has established itself this year among the best in the category, with a series of highly significant victories and successes. The Miller can be considered a top contender for class victory, despite competing with only one machine.

NEW IMPERIAL

E. A. Mellors (250)

NEW IMPERIAL

E. A. Mellors (250 Class)

New Imperial is one of the most famous English marques, made so through a series of victories in the British Tourist Trophy and major continental races. It will be present with a single 250cc machine, ridden by the English ace Mellors; a type of motorcycle that has already persuasively overcome the most severe sporting tests, proving particularly suitable for mixed circuits. The class of the New Imperial, its distant or very recent past, its qualities would be such as to place it in the shortlist for success on the Lario Circuit if it were not for its poor on-site preparation; however, one can expect a very interesting race from the New Imperial, and it would not be at all surprising if it finished close behind the winner.

NORTON (350, 500)

Girotto - Spaggiari

NORTON (350 & 500 Classes)

Girotto - Spaggiari

Norton made its debut at the 1922 Lario Circuit without much success; its fortunes improved in subsequent editions, where it placed second (1925), third (1924, 1930), and fourth (1928)–always in the 500cc category.

This year, it will be represented by three machines entered by privateers–that is, without official factory backing. Nevertheless, Norton possesses all the credentials to seriously contend for victory in the 350cc class, whereas in the 500cc class, it faces stiff competition from rival machines.

It is worth noting that, competing as privateers, Norton won the Italian 350cc championship for two years, finished second in the 500cc class at last year's Milan-Naples race, and won the 350cc class in this year's edition.

RUDGE (250, 350, 500)

(Scuderia Ferrari: Aldrighetti, Pigorini, Colabattisti) – Tyrell Smith – Consonni

RUDGE (250, 350, 500 classes)

(Scuderia Ferrari: Aldrighetti, Pigorini, Colabattisti) – Tyrell Smith – Consonni

Among foreign marques, Rudge boasts the best chance of concluding its participation in the 12th Lario Circuit with a victory–and not merely in the 350cc class, where it starts as the clear favorite. It possesses a glorious history, with its first Italian victories dating back to the pre-war era; in the post-war period, it took up the mantle of another great British marque, racking up consecutive wins on all types of courses. Rudge established itself as a cutting-edge machine through repeated victories at the British TT; even looking specifically at the Lario Circuit, its participation has consistently been crowned with brilliant success.

After finishing second in the 500cc class in 1929, Rudge won the following year and–even more impressively–triumphed in 1931 by setting the absolute fastest time, capping off its success with a win in the 350cc class as well. Since then, Rudge has powered the current champion, Giordano Aldrighetti, to victory, and it currently leads the 350cc standings with a massive advantage that is considered all but insurmountable.

The marque will compete in the 250cc, 350cc, and 500cc categories with a top-tier team of riders. In the smallest class, it relies on Tyrell Smith, and recent practice sessions have already spoken volumes about his prospects in this category. However, the Scuderia Ferrari's best cards will be played by its riders–Aldrighetti, Pigorini, Colabattisti, and Nazzaro–while the tenacious Consonni will back up his teammates in the bid for top honors.

In the 350cc class, the team–led by Pigorini–has the credentials to aim for victory, which, barring unforeseen setbacks, should be within reach. The task is more daunting in the 500cc class, where they will face off against our best machines. The presence of the Rudge adds a passionate element to the Lario Circuit, one that is sure to spark highly dramatic moments.

I protagonisti del XII Circuito del Lario

The Key Figures of the 12th Lario Circuit

ALBERTI R.

(Benelli 175)

ALBERTI R.

(Benelli 175)

The "little giant" of racing from Milan is a specialist on the Lario Circuit, where he made his debut in 1927, finishing fourth in the 175cc class. In subsequent editions, he placed third in 1928 (125cc), third again in 1929 (350cc), second in 1930 (175cc), and finally won the 175cc race in 1931. He knows the Lario course to perfection; a rider of great class and resourcefulness despite his small stature, he stands out as a top contender for victory in his category.

ALDRIGHETTI G.

(Rudge 500)

ALDRIGHETTI G.

(Rudge 500)

The reigning Italian 500cc champion made his debut at the Lario race in 1929 with an unsuitable machine, finishing eighth. He returned in 1931 as the favorite in the 250cc class but had no luck, retiring due to mechanical failure. Since then, his skills have fully matured; today, thanks to his style, a faint physical resemblance, his verve, and his daring, he is considered the successor to Nuvolari. He races for Scuderia Ferrari on a 500cc Rudge and is firmly aiming for the success that will establish him as a popular idol and a worthy successor to the feats of the "Mantuan."

BANDINI T.

(Guzzi 500)

BANDINI T.

(Guzzi 500)

The man from Forlì, square and strong-willed, though not as exuberant as his great predecessor Arcangeli, was "the man of the Lario," despite being no longer very young. He made his debut there in 1925, obtaining a flattering third place in the 500cc class. In 1929 he returned, more combative and with a suitable machine; from the furious battle he emerged with a second place in the 500cc class, following in the footsteps of Varzi; success was now ripe, and in fact the following year Bandini achieved the coveted victory, which he confirmed again in 1931 with an overall record that established him among our great riders.

Bandini will be third this year at the helm of the Guzzi 500cc; Man and machine form a formidable duo that we can easily consider among the greatest favorites.

BRUSI R.

(Guzzi 250)

R. BRUSI

(Guzzi 250)

Riccardo Brusi–originally from Cesena but having moved to Pesaro–made his mark at the 1927 Lario Circuit, where he raced a 175cc Benelli and finished second, right behind Tonino Benelli. After switching to Guzzi, he placed third in 1928, fifth in 1930, and second in 1931–finishing behind the unbeatable Ugo Prini.

He returns to the Lario Circuit boasting a truly illustrious career; the only thing missing is the crowning achievement of a victory on the Lario roads–a goal Riccardo Brusi pursues with the firm conviction that he is worthy of it. Aboard his Guzzi, he is considered one of the top contenders to succeed Prini as the class winner.

CAVACCIUTI С.

(C.F. 250)

CAVACCIUTI C.

(C.F. 250)

He is a rising star of Italian motorcycling–a young rider who already boasts a victory in the Milan-Naples race, a feat subsequently confirmed by further successes across all types of courses. He comes fresh from victories in Pesaro and Livorno, achieved on the very same C.F. machine he will ride in the Lario Circuit–a race whose challenges he knows well, having competed in the last two editions and finished fifth and third, respectively, in the 175cc class. We consider him particularly well-suited to mixed courses; he is a young talent rapidly approaching full competitive maturity. If luck is on his side, he will undoubtedly put in a great performance, and we would not be at all surprised to see him emerge as the winner of this fiercely contested category.

COLABATTISTI

(Rudge 500)

COLABATTISTI

(Rudge 500)

A young rider who is rapidly gaining experience under the guidance of Commendatore Enzo Ferrari; he is competing in the Lario Circuit for the first time representing Scuderia Ferrari, and his role will likely be to back up Pigorini. In any case, his race promises to be one of the most interesting.

COLOMBO M.

(Bianchi 500)

M. COLOMBO

(Bianchi 500)

The popular "Mario"–hardened by the rugged school of Lombard racers, and a rider who is sturdy, impetuous, and determined–is a veteran of the Lario circuit. He made his debut there in 1926, finishing third in the 500cc class. Two years later, in 1928, he claimed a brilliant victory that remains one of the finest gems in his impressive collection of achievements; however, luck plagued him in subsequent editions, seeing him finish fourth in 1929, retire in 1930, and place second in 1931, right behind Bandini. He possesses the ideal physique for grueling races like the Lario Circuit; he returns this year–backed by his enduring class and driven by fierce determination–at the helm of the Bianchi 500, a machine he successfully rode to second place in the Milan-Naples race last spring. Given his racing credentials and the qualities of his machine, he rightfully ranks among the favorites.

CONSONNI G.

(Rudge 350)

G. CONSONNI

(Rudge 350)

Consonni, from Carate, is a true amateur driven by an unquenchable passion; racing has taken a heavy physical toll on him, yet his enthusiasm remains undimmed. He previously competed in the Lario Circuit in 1931, finishing sixth in the 500cc class. He does not aspire to overall victory, but he is capable of a strong performance; provided luck is on his side, we may well see him achieve a top-tier finish.

FUMAGALLI С.

(Bianchi 500)

C. FUMAGALLI

(Bianchi 500)

He is the "man of the hour," the odds-on favorite for overall victory in the 12th Lario Circuit. Curly-haired Fumagalli lives in Lecco and knows the roads of the Lario region to perfection. He has raced there before: in 1929, finishing second in the 250cc class, and in 1931, placing third in the 350cc class. His career boasts brilliant victories–such as the inaugural Milan-Naples race and the first International Speed Trophy, to name just the most significant ones.

Bianchi will find a formidable champion in Carlo Fumagalli; still young, yet hungry for success, he is one of the most popular riders of the moment. Naturally, he will have the enthusiastic roar of his fellow locals behind him, all eager to see him triumph on these familiar, home roads. If one were to narrow down the field and whittle down the list of contenders, the strongest support for the outright favorite would undoubtedly go to Carlo Fumagalli.

GARETTONI G.

(Calthorpe 500)

GARETTONI G.

(Calthorpe 500)

Giuseppe Garettoni is one of the most popular Roman runners. He boasts a long and brilliant career, but it is his first time running on the roads of the Lario. His aspirations go no further than that to obtain a good ranking.

GHERSI M.

(Gilera 500)

GHERSI M.

(Gilera 500)

Mario Ghersi rode his finest races on the Lario Circuit, yet he never managed to win. He was poised to beat Nuvolari and Varzi, only to be let down by a tire at the crucial moment; his performance was admirable and thrilling, but he could never quite overcome his bad luck. Fourth in 1923 (showing just how far back Mario Ghersi's experience goes–though back then he was little more than a lad!), second in 1925 and 1926 on the 350cc machine; retired in 1929; second again in 1930 and 1931, still on the 350cc bike. A record to be proud of, were it not for the way Mario Ghersi was so often relegated to second place after having victory within his grasp. This year he will race the brand-new Gilera 500; the machine's potential and the rider's current form remain an absolute mystery. Let us hope–for the good of our sport and the success of the 12th Lario race–that the Mario Ghersi-Gilera pairing proves as impressive as it was at the unforgettable Tigullio Circuit; with better luck, of course.

GIROTTO S.

(Norton 350 cmc.)

GIROTTO S.

(Norton 350cc)

He's a passionate amateur with a certain class, and he's appearing on the Lario scene for the first time. He won the 350cc Milano-Napoli this year, a title of unquestionable merit and value. If he rides a smart race, he could finish in the wake of the leaders.

LAMA F.

(M.M. 175)

Francesco Lama

(M.M. 175)

The young racer from Romagna possesses all the qualities of a rider "born" for small-displacement machines; indeed, having moved past his novice stage, Francesco Lama is rapidly rising to prominence. The Lario race could be "his event"–a victory that would instantly propel him into the ranks of established champions. He has never raced at the Lario.

MANETTI E.

(Galbusera 250)

E. MANETTI

(Galbusera 250)

The perennial Manetti–ever spirited and ever the mischievous rogue despite the passing years–is back in the fray at the Lario circuit, where he first made his mark as a daring champion in 1922. He finished sixth in the 500cc class back then; he fared no better in the subsequent editions (1924–1925), but upon switching to the 175cc class, he achieved his unforgettable victory in 1926. The last three editions were not particularly kind to the fair-haired Milanese rider, who now returns with a machine well-suited to the event. Lately, Manetti has been racing in the smaller displacement classes, repeatedly proving that his old competitive fire still burns bright. What can he achieve at the controls of a 350cc bike amidst such formidable competition? With a bit of luck, Manetti could secure a strong finish–not far behind the winner–provided he sticks to a steady, consistent race pace, though that goes somewhat against his fiercely combative nature.

MANGIONE M.

(Guzzi 250)

MANGIONE M.

(Guzzi 250)

A promising talent in the Roman motorcycling scene, he possesses the qualities needed to rightfully aspire to sporting renown. He will demonstrate his potential on the Lario circuit.

MELLORS E. A.

(New Imperial 250)

MELLORS E. A.

(New Imperial 250)

He arrives at the Lario with the credentials of a recent winner of the Dieppe Circuit; he is an excellent British rider who cut his teeth in the rigorous school of the T.T. He rides a New Imperial, but his limited training will not allow him to fully demonstrate his capabilities.

MORETTI A.

(Guzzi 500)

MORETTI A.

(Guzzi 500)

The popular Milanese rider can consider himself a veteran of the Lario race, having first competed there in 1926 on a 175cc machine. At the time, Moretti came from the world of motorized bicycles, where he had made a name for himself; he suddenly switched to riding for Bianchi in 1927 and emerged with great credit from a direct head-to-head with Nuvolari, finishing second in his class. Still representing the white-and-blue team, he took part in subsequent editions–placing third in 1928–though he faced decidedly poor luck in the following years, when he was forced to retire. Amilcare Moretti thus underwent his toughest apprenticeship on the roads of the Lario Circuit, alongside a master of the caliber of Nuvolari. One can imagine the determination with which Amilcare Moretti is approaching the upcoming race, where he will be riding the 500cc Guzzi. Fresh from the Swiss Grand Prix–where he clearly demonstrated that his talent remains undiminished–Amilcare Moretti possesses all the credentials to rightfully aspire to the success he has long craved and fully deserves. He is one of the race favorites, and his performance will certainly be among the most compelling to watch.

PAGANI N.

(Miller 250 cmc.)

PAGANI N.

(Miller 250 km/h.) The blond, young Milanese rider has been preparing for a great feat for a couple of years now; not to mention the excellent placements he achieved in the Milan-Naples race. We remember his victory on the Arona Circuit, which prompted comments about Pagani: "He's the man for the Lario." He attempted it in 1930 when he was still a bit of a novice, and didn't have luck on his side. This year, he seems to have found the perfect machine in Miller for him, and he has already achieved a series of championship race wins, which have marked him out as a dangerous contender to succeed the Brusis and Panellas in the possession of the Italian jersey.

We know he is extremely well-prepared for the route, which he knows very well; He's a guy brimming with class and determination, and he owns a machine capable of any feat. Among the tangle of names among the 250cc favorites, Pagani fits right in, and he could even walk away with the victory that will proclaim him the all-around champion.

PIGORINI A.

(Rudge 350)

PIGORINI A.

(Rudge 350)

Among the protagonists of the Lario edition 1929, undoubtedly one of the most fought, we remember very well the then debutant and unknown Pigorini, driving a Nagas-Ray that was not exactly brand new, and with which the Novato native was able to achieve an excellent fourth place, the importance of which was not lost on to the technicians, who glimpsed in Pigorini an element of certain future. The confirmation was to come two years later, in the 1931 Circuito del Lario, which it marked Pigorini's first great victory, and consecrated him in the limited number of aces. Today the chubby colt » from Scuderia Ferrari is someone; he is the winner of a Milan-Naples, he is the now unassailable leader of the championship, and therefore close to wearing the tricolor jersey for the cat. 350, and is finally the absolute favorite as winner of the XII Lario circuit category 350, cm. In the previous five championship races Pigorini has always won; It would be strange if he didn't win there too sixth, perhaps useless due to the fate of the championship now decided in his favor, but the most important victory in effect of valorization. Pigorini cares, to the new success in the Circuito del Lario, and certainly deserve it.

PRINI U.

PRINI U.

(Guzzi 250) Ugo Prini is a specialist of the Lario Circuit; he may have lost all other races, but at Lario, no one can boast of having beaten Prini since Guzzi entrusted him with one of their 250cc machines. Indeed, after a promising debut in the 1923 edition–which saw him take third place in the 500cc class, a feat repeated the following year in the 350cc category–the Guzzi-Prini pairing triumphed in the 250cc class in 1926. History repeated itself the following year, marking a run of five victories in five appearances for the fiery Prini–a rider with a highly distinctive, unmistakable style defined by sheer drive, daring, impetuousness, and vigor. The classic Prini-Guzzi partnership remains a major draw in the fiercely contested 250cc category, where the indomitable Road Militia brigadier starts as the clear favorite.

ROSSETTI A.

(Benelli 175).

ROSSETTI A.

(Benelli 175). He is the reigning Italian 350cc champion, but having left that category this year to race for Benelli, he has already achieved enough to take the lead in the standings. He is familiar with the Lario Circuit, having raced there in 1931 and finished sixth in the 350cc class. Since then, the Roman rider has made tremendous progress, honing his skills; today, he ranks among our best riders and is particularly formidable on mixed courses. In the 175cc class, he is somewhat hampered by his weight–a factor that significantly affects machine performance on the Ghisallo climb–but he will be able to offset this disadvantage by drawing on his immense talent as a top-class rider. Within the small field of 175cc competitors, Amilcare Rossetti stands out as the clear favorite for the overall win.

SECCHI S.

SECCHI S.

(Velocette 350)

A tenacious, solid, and excellent rider from Milan who has already demonstrated his worth with impressive performances. Although new to the Lario Circuit, he could play a pivotal role in the battle for second or third place.

SERAFINI D.

(M.M. 175)

SERAFINI D.

(175cc Class)

Having honed his skills in the Pesaro school of racing, Dorino Serafini first made his mark as the champion of Rome; since then, his career has been filled with victories, culminating in his winning the Italian 175cc championship title.

He is a newcomer to the Lario Circuit, where he will face a weight disadvantage–Serafini has the physique of a rider in the larger displacement classes–yet his sheer class and determination to triumph on what is rightly considered Italy's most popular circuit will overcome this handicap. He possesses all the credentials to contend for victory in his category.

SPAGGIARI G.

(Norton 500)

SPAGGIARI G.

(Norton 500)

He gained widespread national fame by finishing second in the 500cc class in last year's Milan-Naples race. Since then, he has given several practical demonstrations of his class, and he is attempting the Lario Circuit for the first time, seeking greater popularity there.

SUSINI F.

(Bianchi 500)

SUSINI F.

(Bianchi 500)

Federico Susini, from Livorno, arrives at the Lario Circuit backed by the momentum of a recent, resounding victory at the Livorno Circuit–a course that, as is well known, shares many similarities with the Lario track. This victory–aided, admittedly, by his familiarity with the local roads–establishes Susini as a key figure at the Lario Circuit and further boosts his already high standing as a Bianchi rider.

Susini, who was also a top contender in the 350cc class last season, previously raced at the Lario Circuit in 1931 but was forced to retire due to mechanical failure. He likely won't be the Bianchi team's lead rider; instead, he will probably be tasked with covering the rear. However, team tactics may prove difficult to execute at Lario this year, and Susini could well find himself with a free hand to go all out. In that scenario, the rider from Livorno might pull off the day's biggest surprise–though it wouldn't truly be a surprise, given that we had foreseen the possibility.

TENNI O.

(Guzzi 500)

TENNI O. (Guzzi 500)

The taciturn rider from Treviso–after a long period of development dating back to the days of 125cc motorized bicycles–has shot to fame in recent years and is now one of Italy's most popular racers. His victory in the *Trofeo della Velocità* and his recent performance at the Swiss Grand Prix suggest that this is the year of Omobono Tenni, the Guzzi team's leading rider and aggressive competitor.

His past record on the Lario Circuit is not particularly remarkable–we recall him finishing third in the 350cc class in 1931, which is certainly something–but we also remember his superb victory at Arona. That race took place on a circuit very similar to Lario, demonstrating his great skill on challenging, uneven courses.

Omobono Tenni undoubtedly has what it takes to win the Lario Circuit, especially since learning to temper his naturally spirited, aggressive racing style. In this stalwart champion from Treviso, Guzzi possesses a formidable contender who could well emerge as the winner of the 12th Lario Circuit.

TYRELL-SMITH H. G.

(Rudge 250)

TYRELL-SMITH H. G.

(Rudge 250)

He is one of the best-known British riders; he won the 350cc Tourist Trophy in 1930 and finished second in the 250cc class in 1932. He has been one of the most admired–albeit somewhat unlucky– protagonists in recent editions of the TT. He is racing a 250cc Rudge at the Lario Circuit and has trained thoroughly; during practice, he kept his true potential closely guarded–making it an unknown factor–though it is unlikely to prove strong enough to overturn the prediction that an Italian rider on an Italian machine will take the victory.
