Jack Carruthers, an Australian sidecar champion, serviced Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the Australian Army.
His son Kelvin received special dispensation from the Army to test ride them at the age of 15. Kel Carruthers went on to dominate Australian road racing before leaving with his young family to join the Continental Circus. Carruthers won the 1969 world 250cc championship, joining fellow Australian GP title winners Keith Campbell (350cc, 1957) and Tom Phillis (125cc, 1961). His historic win received barely a mention in the parochial press of the day which was largely controlled then, as now, by Rupert Murdoch.

Mr. A. J. Gazzard has on exhibition in his large and attractive showrooms at the City Cycle Works and Garage the latest in Harley-Davidson construction, viz., a 1922 model H.D. and car, the special features of which are roller bearings throughout engine and gearbox, large combustion chambers in cylinders, larger benzine tanks which hold 2 Imperial gallons, and oil tank 1 gallon, haybestos-lined [sic] toe and heel brakes, internal and external drum type, special springing throughout, together with the exclusive Harley-Davidson sight-feed mechanical oiling system and special side-car attach ment, which stands for strength, comfort and long life. There is also the Speedwell cycle, of long standing on the Australian market. Clarence cycles are built on the premises to customers' specification if required. Car tyres and car accessories, together with cycle and motor cycle accessories, are in great variety. Mr. Gazzard's plant and workshop are always well worth a visit but the public are specially invited to look through this fine establishment this Xmas. It is one of Grafton's showplaces, and in every way a credit and an ornament to the city.
