Norton built 851 500T models between 1949 and 1954, of which 74 were exported to the United States. The machines were fitted with an Amal 276 carburettor and a Smiths chronometric speedometer.

This particular machine is very well documented and has been featured in articles in magazines like Motorcycle Collector and Classic Motorcycle, and was well received at motorcycle shows as demonstrated by the many laurels it won during the 1990s.

It was purchased at auction in the US by the Classic Motorcycle Museum of Nelson, New Zealand in January, 2011
