Laverda 1000cc Motorcycles

Laverda 1971 1000cc Prototype

First Laverda 1000cc prototype, believed to be the one seen at the Milan Fair in 1971. Engine no. 1000 001. Sand-cast cases along with many other difference to the production machines - sand-cast engine cases of a different pattern, 750 instruments and handlebar, ignition key placement and even sand-cast Dell'Orto carbs.

1975 1000 Endurance

Laverda started development of its 1000cc 3C for endurance racing in 1972 and competed in the 1974 European championship. The following year saw the Luciano Zen's "Space Frame" introduced, primarily to eliminate the tendency for high speed weaving that the earlier bikes exhibited. A very large fairing was also fitted to provide superior weather protection during 24 hour races. The fuel tank was enlarged to 24 litres. Also the alternator was moved forward contributing to increased ground clearance. Riders for the '75 season were Augusto Brettoni, Roberto Gallina, Marco Lucchinelli and Georges Fougeray with the best results being a 5th at Barcelona & 10th at Spa. Of the five bikes constructed only three are known to still exist. 95hp at 7,800rpm. Wet weight 210kg. Top speed 240kph.

1981 1000 Jota

At the behest of the UK importer, Roger Slater, Laverda developed the Jota in 1976 - initially only for sale in the UK. It featured racing 4C camshafts, compression raised from 9:1 to 10:1, a free flowing exhaust system and produced 90hp at 7,800rpm. The Jota later became more widely available and in the UK, South Africa & Australasia retained the 4C cams, while in most European markets milder A12 cams and a more restrictive exhaust were fitted. Originally the engine had a 180 degree crankshaft but later changed to 120 degrees. Production ended in 1981-82. Wet weight 240kg. Top speed 225kph.

1984 1000 RGA Jota

Basically the same as the more expensive RGS but with a much smaller fairing and without the 'snorkel' fuel filler. The tank and seat were also different. Despite the "Jota" designation there was no difference in power output to the standard RGS models.
