Beta TR35 "Reverse" Trial Test - Riding impressions.

Grande BETA !

E grazie Carlo Miniotti per prestarmela !

The Beta TR35 "Reverse" occupies a special place in the list of my favorite trial bikes for several reasons. First because it's a 1990 model, the year of my birth, then because my father had a similar one, and about 17 years ago I was already trying to ride it in the garden of the house that had a nice slope, but then got lost... and also because it was developed by the legendary Jordi Tarres, with whom I did a trials riding course years ago - he taught me a lot and we are now great friends.

When my friend Carlo Miniotti, who is passionate about motorcycles and cars, recently bought a motorcycle like this, I had him promise me to allow a Trials Test. We chose as the location a beautiful trial park in Rubiana, near Turin, which has several obstacles suitable for all levels of observed trials, from simple to quite challenging.

On a fresh and sunny Sunday there were many people, mostly young Piedmontese riders, to train. When I opened the doors of my van and pulled out TR35, in the midst of all modern trial bikes - Evo (current Beta trial), Vertigo, TRRS produced by friend Tarres, Sherco, Gas Gas - surprisingly, everyone was interested in my Beta, even those who are 16 years old and ride modern motorcycles.

Their curiosity satisfied, I fuel up the machine, checked the tyres, started it and warmed it up. Then I began riding the usual easy sections to get the feel of the new mount. Up, down, steeper and steeper - the bike was very stable and easy to control, thanks to excellent disc brakes, mono rear suspension and upside-down forks.

I then moved to some more difficult rocky section. Engine and clutch are excellent and allow you to raise the front wheel in almost any situation in order to successfully attack steps of considerable height - see the photos ...

You can feel the imprint of master Jordi Tarres, and a big thankyou to him!

Even in tight turns the bike is very manageable, and if you do have a problem you can save yourself with "surplace" [1] and although the bike weighs 84 kg, it seems lighter.

Now I understand Tarres's technical mastery, which after the Beta, led to success with Gas Gas and the exceptional Jota Gas and the latest TRRS.

To answer those who want to ask me what I think of this bike, I just say that I'm already looking for one. I'd also be keen to try examples of the ZERO, TECNO, REV, EVO4T and perhaps even a Beta enduro - but that's another story.

Great BETA!

And thanks Carlo Miniotti for lending it to me!

A Few Words on the Beta TR35

No comment !

COMPLIMENTI BETA ?

E dicono che Arte Moderna e in crisi....

The Beta TR35 "Reverse" trial, subject of this test, has an interesting history, being the last aircooled machine to take the Trials World Championship in the hands of exceptional Spanish rider Jordi Tarres. From that point all trials bikes, beginning in 1990 with the Beta "ZERO" ridden by the unbeatable Tarres, had liquid-cooled engines.

This was an important moment in the history of trial motorcycle development, in sense the zero point, hence the name "Zero" for the machine which started a new era of Observed Trials.

The BETA TR35 "Reverse" was the last of the successful Beta "TR" series - 32, 33, 34, 35, 35 Reverse.

What a mature talent the young Jordi Tarres displayed. Tarres and Beta have won 4 World Championships, in 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1991. He then moved to a new Spanish motorcycle manufacturer GASGAS, and on their machines he won three more world championships: 1993, 1994 and 1995.

International recognition of the importance of Beta trial bikes came in 1998, when the Guggenheim presented in 1998 a major art exhibition entitled "The Art of the Motorcycle", organized by the art curator of this famous museum, Thomas Kern, notwithstanding criticism from various art experts who supported the idea that motion is not an art object.

The result was sensational.

LARGEST NUMBER OF VISITORS in this exhibition - 2,000,000 (two million) in 5 years at 4 Museums - New York, Chicago, Bilbao Spain and Las Vegas. The Exhibition closed in 2005 after quite incredible and unexpected success! This great event was accompanied by the sales success of its beautiful exhibition catalog - "The Art of the Motorcycle" was twice reprinted for another record of 250,000 copies sold, the best-selling catalog the Guggenheim had ever compiled.

You may ask what does this story have to do with Beta Trial? Dougie Lampkin's Beta was one of two trials machine selected for exhibition; the other? Have a guess ...

It was another great bike, Sammy Millers BULTACO SHERPA T.

This gives me an idea for next test, if I can find someone who will loan me ...

Congratulations BETA?

And they say that Modern Art is in crisis .... No comment!

Notes
1. Surplace

The French term surplace means "on the place, on the spot".

It refers to technique in modern trials where the rider stands motionless, feet up, in front of an obstacle, preparing mentally whilst physically bouncing the machine, compressing and releasing the suspension thus locating the motorcycle in the perfect position to clean the obstacle. All trials riders can do it, some for several minutes, but there is now time limit in Observed Trials rules. This technique was "invented" by Trials World Champion Bernie Schreiber of America, and was quickly adopted and successfully used by several French riders, hence this expression is from French.

To maintain balance riders use light clutch to move the machine slightly forward and backwards, usually with the front wheel slightly turned and if necessary with a leg extended.
