Norton "De Luxe" Side-car
In designing, great care has been taken to avoid the faults considered inherent to this type of vehicle, and special attention has been devoted to—
1. Comfort for the passenger.
2. The carriage of ample luggage for touring, in a cleanly and unobtrusive manner.
3. Convenience for a two gallon reserve of petrol and one of oil without endangering the strength and appearance of the chassis, as the usual unsprung and unsightly method does.
4. Avoidance of shock or jar to the passenger, and that dangerous tendency to side swing or rocking, which is so detrimental to easy steering.
For Comfortable Touring.
This exceptionally roomy and comfortable outfit is a distinct advance upon the usual article.
At first glance one receives the impression of class, which a closer examination intensifies.
The rear of body swings down (to form a table for an "alfresco" luncheon or picnic) and exposes a compartment for petrol and oil tins, whilst golf sticks, fishing rods, or gun may be passed below the seat from the rear (see illustration) and carried unobtrusively and without inconvenience.
The swing-down back has an independent hinged lid, and forms a locker capacious enough to carry personal effects sufficient for a lengthy tour, the whole closing up, dust and weather proof, into the clean and pleasing lines of the body, no external evidence of luggage being visible.
Standard finish is in a rich deep green, with upholstery to match, comfortable arm rests are fitted, the door and sides are padded, and contain two large pockets for books, maps, or other light articles. They are closed by a strong flap with snap fastening.
The seat is of good depth, and is provided with a roll front removable spring cushion. The spring back gives exceptional comfort.
The body is superbly finished, and lined with black band edged with a delicate shade of green. The Chassis is finished in best black enamel.
Springing is extremely good, with non-rattling bearings, permitting steady silent running, even when empty, yet very flexible.
A strong lamp bracket is secured to the body just forward of the door, which is fastened by a strong nickeled turn-key.
The mudguard is of the silent type, valanced on the inside, and sprung with the body, leaving the tyre readily accessible for repairs.
Total weight of side-car ready for the road, 134 lbs. Width of seat, 18in. Length from back of seat to toe of body inside, 4 ft. Total overall width of outfit, including handlebars, 58 in. Wheel track, 40 in.
A strong waterproof cover-all storm apron, with extension and neck, opening to form a poncho, is fitted without extra charge, and gives splendid protection from wind and ram.
A wind screen and fold-back hood may be fitted as extras.
Embodying the essentials of touring comfort and convenience. This low-built, roomy body, with removable spring seat, and with spring back, is designed on lines which give a minimum of wind resistance and power absorption, making this model ideal for speed work, without materially lessening its comfort for touring.
The side-car may be supplied in combination with either of the preceding models. An exclusive Norton design.
For Competition or Fast Touring.
This has been designed to meet the requirements of those who, whilst desirous of doing a little speed and competition work, also wish to possess a vehicle capable of being used for comfortable touring, and with medium capacity for luggage carrying.
The usual racing side-car is totally devoid of this convenience, and in no sense can be considered "the thing" for a lady passenger. Without detracting from the speed possibilities of the car, owing to the graduated stream line and the extended rear, the "NORTON" body is roomy and comfortable, being fitted with spring seat and back. The rear extension forms a capacious locker, in which a tin of petrol, oil, and personal effects may be carried; the extension, of course, being a distinct advantage when the outfit is used for speed work, or against head winds. Access is gained by a hinged top.
The Norton silent suspension consists of three leaf cee springs at the rear and quarter elliptic at the front, preventing that annoying and dangerous side-sway on corners by means of an interlocking device for the springs which prohibits twisting.
A 26 X 2¼ or 650 x 65 tyre is fitted, and general finish is as the De Luxe model.
Total weight of car, ready for the road, 108 lbs.
A strong coverall storm-apron, with extension and neck opening to form a poncho, is supplied as standard without extra charge.
The Norton "Special" Side-car.
THE OUTFIT FOR THREE.
In general specification this is as our De Luxe Side-car, but the design of body is an enlarged edition of our Sports Model, with a patented well-screened seat for a child, or alternatively great luggage capacity.
This Model is designed particularly for those desirous of carrying a child in addition to the usual passenger. Whilst this may be done in the De Luxe Model, it is at some expense of comfort, both for the child and adult, and in addition results in bad weight distribution.
The "Special" or Family Model, on the contrary, is a delightfully comfortable carriage for the adult, being in this respect and in dimension precisely as the De Luxe, whilst the rear extension incorporates a patented hammock dickey seat with high upholstered back for the child, who is carried comfortably, safely, and in a sheltered, well protected position.
The seat is detachable, being supported at one end on a steel rod falling into slots in the side-car frame. When not required, the hammock is instantly unhung, and then falls flat to the bottom of the body, leaving a very large locker for two petrol tins, luggage, etc.
The side-car may be supplied with a plain locker, and without the dickey seat, if desired.
