The museum was established by Hilde and Walter Proebst in 1980 and has grown to cover some 900 square metres, making it one of the largest in Germany. The collection encompasses some 70 automobiles and 110 motorcycles, along with 200 engines. Many of the exhibits are rarities and technically interesting or unusual. In addition to the German marques represented, there are vehicles from France, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy, the United States and Sweden.

For the competition-minded, there are over 50 sports and racing cars along with 16 racing motorcycles - of these are speedway bikes.
